I Started Legacy Decluttering at 32
What began in survival slowly became purpose
There’s something I don’t speak about often.
I began legacy decluttering when I was 32 years old.
My children were still toddlers. I was navigating postpartum depression layered on top of existing PMDD, and there were days my mind spiralled into very dark places.
At the same time, my parents quietly inspired me. They had always approached life with care and thoughtfulness - keeping their affairs organized, making things easier for the people they loved.
I wrote more about that here:
And strangely… thinking about dying well became one of the things that helped me keep living.
This is not medical advice - only my personal experience - but every time my thoughts spiralled, I would gently remind myself:
I can’t go yet.
There are people I love.
Things I want to leave behind.
A life I still want to participate in.
So I began with small, tender acts of care.
Organizing paperwork.
Letting go of clutter.
Writing things down.
Creating systems.
Making life softer for the people I love.
What started as survival slowly became purpose.
Last year, for my 39th birthday, I gifted myself end-of-life doula training to deepen this work even further - not from morbidity, but from a desire to meet life, loss, and legacy with greater presence, tenderness, and care.
Over the years, I’ve come to see legacy decluttering not as something reserved for the elderly, but as a compassionate practice for any stage of life. Anything can happen - as many of us were reminded recently with the heartbreaking passing of our dear friend at the prime of his life.
This is why I now teach using a blend of the KonMari Method and Swedish Death Cleaning philosophies.
Not from fear.
But from love.
An act of coming home to yourself.
Creating space to breathe.
To reflect.
To get curious about the one precious life we have - and the legacy we wish to leave behind.

This is beautiful and important. I feel like my whole Substack and my book are my way of documenting what I know so is someday my kids have their own family, they can learn with their partners to help guide my grandchildren! 😄 Every life lesson, every decision, I think about what am I modeling for them, what will they remember when I am gone.
They often joke about my favorite words are “Fight or flight” - my work is done here. 😂
